What is a single-layer PCB?

In our daily lives, electronic products are everywhere. From mobile phones, TVs to home appliances and toys, they are almost inseparable from a core component inside, that is, PCB, also known as printed circuit board. The function of PCB is to provide electrical connection and support platform for electronic components. Single-layer PCB is the most basic and common type of PCB.


Basic structure of single-layer PCB


Single-layer PCB, as the name suggests, refers to a board with only one layer of conductive copper foil on the circuit board. This layer of copper foil is usually located on one side of the circuit board, covered with lines and pads for connecting components. The other side is insulating material, generally fiberglass or other plastic materials, which are not conductive.


Because the circuit has only one layer, all circuit design and welding work are also concentrated on this side. This makes the single-layer PCB simple in structure, easy to manufacture and low in cost.

Although electronic devices are becoming more and more complex, single-layer PCBs still play an important role in many products. Especially in devices with low circuit requirements and relatively simple functions, such as:

The circuit structure of these devices is usually relatively simple, and a single-layer PCB is sufficient to meet the needs.


Advantages of single-layer PCB


The first is low cost. Due to its simple structure and mature manufacturing process, the production cost of single-layer PCB is much lower than that of multi-layer boards.


The second is easy processing. No complex multi-layer lamination process is required, and wiring and maintenance are relatively easy.


The third is high stability. Under the premise of reasonable design, the failure rate of single-layer boards is low, which is suitable for basic equipment for long-term use.


Limitations of single-layer PCB


Of course, single-layer PCBs are not omnipotent. Because only one side can be wired, the wiring space is limited, which is not suitable for complex or high-density circuit design.


If electronic products need to process a large number of signals, have multiple functions, or have high requirements for electromagnetic compatibility, then double-layer or multi-layer PCBs are needed to meet the needs.


Single-layer PCB is the most basic and economical type of circuit board. It is widely used in various basic electronic products with its simple structure, low cost and high production efficiency. Although its application scenarios are limited, it is still indispensable in many fields.


For beginners or start-up electronic projects, choosing a single-layer PCB is a very cost-effective choice. Understanding it is the first step to enter the field of electronic manufacturing.
